Health & Wellbeing

The cocker spaniel is generally a well-built and healthy breed. But can be affected by disease and illness
Each page includes a general overview information for cocker spaniel owners, and is followed with more comprehensive information and my own Health Research notes.

Health

Heredity Disease

Like all breeds the cocker spaniel is effected by a number of diseases, breeders have tools such as DNA testing to prevent any dog being affected by a number of these diseases.

The 3 most significant are PRA, FN & AON

Reputable Cocker Spaniel breeders undertake health testing prior to breeding to ensure that the breed remains as free as possible from hereditary diseases and defects.

Grooming

Basic care of a cocker spaniel includes regular brushing plus bathing and trimming when required. Trimming, depending on the coat quality and length, is between 4–8 times a year. You can easily learn how to trim yourself or take your dog to a groomer.
The end result should look soft and natural avoiding the "over-trimmed" manicured look.
The link above will provide more information about grooming.
